NORTH AMERICAN TREATY ORGANIZATION

The North American Treaty Organization (NATO) was set up after WW II by different countries for the protection of each other. It has expanded over the years.
The following is a listing of the 12 countries formed the NATO on April 4, 1949 in Washington DC..

They agreed to come to the defense of any member in case of an attack from any external party.
BELGIUM
CANADA
DENMARK
FRANCE
ICELAND
ITALY
LUXEMBOURG
NETHERLANDS
NORWAY
PORTUGAL
UNITED KINGDOM
UNITED STATES

On February 18, 1952 Greece and Turkey joined NATO.

West Germany came in on May 9, 1955 and was joined by former German Democratic Republic on Oct 3, 1990.

Spain, on May 30, 1982 became a member.
.
On March 12, 1000 Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland joined.

The last 7 joined on March 29, 2004. They are Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Lithuania.

The Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand would like to join but can not because they were outside of the area that NATO covers. The US formed another treaty with them.called the ANZUS treaty.(See article about this treaty)

Any country can join but any of the other countries can veto any new country. Like Turkey who blocked Cyprus wish because of the Cyprus dispute. Also only European state are now eligible for membership. Iceland does not have any armed force.

NATO also has a agreement called the Mediterranean Dialogue with the following countries.
Algeria
Egypt
Israel
Jordan
Morocco
Tunisia.

Israel covers the joint military in the Mediterranean Sea.

NATO has a agreement with 23 other countries "Called Parnership for Peace. This group include 12 former Soviet republics, 5 countries that are allway neutral (Switzerland, etc) and 6 others like Albania Croatia, etc. that we will help if needed. Malta joined in 1994 but withdrew in 1996. Cyprus wanted to join but Turkey blocked them.
