STATES MOPEDS RULES AND LAWS

The following are the official laws and
rules of the different states regarding mopeds. If you know of any changes needed for this page please let me
know at the e-mail address at the end.
The following are the codes for this
list. The first number if between 12 –
21 is the minimum are for riding or driving a moped. If (1) shows it means that you have to have the following
equipment: brakes, headlamp, taillight, stoplight, mirrors, and muffler. Any other equipment is also listed. If helmets are required there also will have
a (2).
Alabama 14 (1) (2). Shoes also required
Alaska 14 (1) (2)
Arizona 16 (1)
Arkansas (1)
California No motorcycles drivers license required if cannot run over 20
mph
Colorado 16 (1)
Connecticut Follow all motorcycle rules
Delaware 15 Can not operate on interstate or limited access roads
Florida 16 (2)If motor displacement is over 151 cc minimum age 16.
Not on sidewalk if motor is running.
Georgia 15 (2) Equipment same as motorcycles.
Hawaii 15. Unlawful to
carry any other person.
Idaho Helmet required if under 18. Max engine is 50cc
Illinois Goggles required Unlawful to carry any other person
Indiana 15 Protective goggle & headgear if under 18
Iowa 14 Motorcycle license required. Unlawful to carry any
other person
Kansas 15 Speed 20 mph limit
Kentucky 15
Louisiana Motorcycle endorsement. Unlawful to carry any other person
Maine 15 (1) All lights have to be on at all time
Maryland 16
Massachusetts 16 (2) Speed 25 mph
Michigan 15 (2) Unlawful to carry any other person
Minnesota Follow all motorcycle rules
Mississippi (2) Follow all motorcycle rules
Missouri 16 (1)
Montana Different headlight required at different max speed
Nebraska Speed limit 45 mph.
Have to travel right hand lane only
Nevada 16 Do no require
helmets. Need fenders on all wheels
New Hampshire Moped or motorcycle license required.
New Jersey 15 (2) Have to have $15,000 insurance.
New Mexico Follow all motorcycle rules
New York (1) Speed 40 mph limit.
Right hand lane only
North Carolina 16 (2) Horn, brakes, lights only
North Dakota 14 (2)
Ohio 14 (2) Unlawful to carry any other person. Drive within
3 feet of right of road.
Oklahoma 14 Speed 35 mph limit
Oregon 16 Speed 30 mph limit.
Unlawful to carry any other person
Pennsylvania 16 (1) License plates
Rhode Island 15 Cannot drive on the interstate
South Carolina 14 Speed 30 mph limit
South Dakota 14 (2) Lights required
Tennessee 14 (1) (2)
Texas 15 If under 50cc speed limit 30
Utah If under 18 headgear required. Right hand lane only. Unlawful to carry any
other person
Vermont 16
Virginia 16 (2) Speed 30 mph limit.
Right hand lane only
Washington 16 Never on a bikeway, interstate, trail.
West Virginia 16 (1)
Wisconsin 14 Headlights on at all time. Unlawful to carry any other
person
Wyoming Follow all motorcycle rules
