LICENSE PLATES WHEN
VEHICLE ARE SOLD

Each state has different rules about
license plates when the vehicle is sold.
The laws can be change at any time.
Special plates have different rules, check with states. When you transfer plates to another
vehicle you will need to pay all fees etc.
There are rules that you have to follow that you have to give to the states
about records keeping. If you know of

Alabama Plates are to be removed and transferred to new vehicle
after fees are paid.
Alaska License plates stay with vehicle
Arizona Owner keeps the plates and can transfer to a new vehicle
or turn in and get a refund.
Arkansas An owner of a permanent plate can transfer to another
vehicle
California License plates stay with vehicle
Colorado Plates can not be transfer between 2 different owners
Connecticut When sold, return all plates to state within 10 days
Delaware License plates stay with vehicle
Florida When sold, return all plates to state or transfer to
another vehicle
Georgia Owner can transfer to another vehicle, or to another
owner.
Hawaii The owner can request the transfer of plates from one to
another vehicle.
Idaho Plates stay with original owner. Can go on another vehicle
Illinois
When sold, return all plates
to state.
Indiana Plates can transferred to another person if the new
vehicle is the same type.
Iowa The Owner has to send the plates to the county
treasurer within 30 days
Kansas
When sold, remove plates
immediately.
Kentucky License plates stay with vehicle
Louisiana When sold, remove and destroy immediately and let state
know.
Maine Plates expire when vehicle is sold
Maryland Former owner may transfer plates to another vehicle or the
plates will expire in 10 days.
Massachusetts When sold, return plates to state
Michigan When sold, remove and destroy or save for another
vehicle
Minnesota
When sold, return all plates
to state with in 10 days
Mississippi When sold, remove and save for state inspection
Missouri When sold, remove transfer to another vehicle or return to
state
Montana Plates expires when sold.
Nebraska License plates stay with vehicle
Nevada Plates stay with original vehicle
New Hampshire Plates stay with original vehicle if new owner applies to
state
New Jersey License plates may be transferred to another vehicle with
same owner
New Mexico When sold, remove all plates to state with in 30 days
New York When sold, remove, return to state or register to another
vehicle
North Carolina When sold, remove, return to state or register to another
vehicle
North Dakota When sold, remove, return to state or register to another
vehicle
Ohio When sold, remove, return to state or register to
another vehicle with in 30 days
Oklahoma
The former owner can
transfer the plates to another vehicle
Oregon Plates stay with original vehicle
Pennsylvania The former owner can transfer the plates to another
vehicle
Rhode Island When sold, remove, return to state or register to another
vehicle with in 10 days
South Carolina When sold, remove, notify the state, transfer to another vehicle
with in 30 days or return to state.
South Dakota Plates stay with original vehicle.
Tennessee When sold, remove, return to county clerk or transfer to
another vehicle
Texas Plates stay with original vehicle
Utah When sold, remove, return to state or transfer to
another vehicle
Vermont When sold, remove, return to state or transfer to another
vehicle
Virginia When sold, transfer to another vehicle with same
owner
Washington Plates stay with original vehicle
West Virginia When sold, remove, return to state or transfer to another
vehicle
Wisconsin Plates stay with original vehicle
Wyoming When sold, remove, return to state or transfer to another
vehicle with in 30 days
