U.S. TRADE ACT of 2002 |
by Ted Peterson
.
The Trade Act of 2002 is sometime called the U.S. Trade Promotion Authority Act. This act grants the President the authority to negotiate trade deals with other countries. The Congress can only vote up or down any of the agreement. They cannot amend it.
.
Most news people called this the "fast track authority" because it can be approve in no time by making it easier to negotiate deals.
The president did not have the authority after the Uruguary Round Agreement expired in 1994 until this act was passed in 2002.
.
This authority will expire in July of this year unless Congress extend it. We will try to find out it they do this and will update this page.
