WHAT ARE CALORIES

by Ted Peterson
.
This article is how the rating on calories came into being.
.
The calorie rating of food is the measures of the energy content in terms of heat when about one quat (one kilogram) of water raise 1 degree of temperature. This makes one calorie.
.
You can take the same amount of any food and see how much heat is needed to raise the items one degree. If it takes 5 times that amount of heat the item is said to take 5 calories to burn.
.
If you take an apple that is rated at 90 calories, release enough heat energy when eaten in your body to warm 90 kilograms of water 1 degree. This will be the same scale for all items eaten.
.
When they say that you will eat 1,000 calories a day it means you eat the amount of food that your body could take in so that you could walk, live, etc. for that day
.
Sedentary ladies need 1,600 - 1,700 calories a day, an active lady need up to 2,209 calories a day. A sedentary men need 2,200 - 2,300 calories a day, and a active man 2,800. A teenage boy needs about 2,800 and a teenage girl needs about 2,200 calories a day.
.
These are the average. You may need more or less depending on how you live.
.
The calories in food list can generate more calories of heat as quantities of fuels and different explosives. The energy contained in foods (calories) is less noticeable then other substances (dynamite) because it is released slowly at many points of body each day. Explosives will release their energy instantly.
.
All foods that you eat are made up of three types. They are carbohydrates, proteins and fats. You also needs some vitamins and minerals. The vitamins and minerals are on another article in this set.
.
You do not have to have any spice to live but there have been wars over spices. Spice is for flavour. There is a complete article on spices in one of the articles on this web
.
Most foods that we heat has to be cooked. Cooking adds calories, some minerals, flavour, and other things. Cooking also can make food last a long time. Some food can not be eaten without cooking. Some food can kill you if you do not cook them
.
Most carbohydrate do not need to be cooked. Some (like potato) can not. You can not eat a raw potato. When you cook a potato, part of it consist of a white, tasteless microscopie item that make up over a fifth of the potato. When you cook the potato these granules swell and burst open making the starch digestible.
Fat most of the time do not need to be cooked. They may add flavour to the food when cooked but most can be eaten without cooking.
.
Most protein foods need to be cooked. Some but not all will make you sick or can kill you if you do not cook them. Protein makes up meat, fish, chicken, etc of any food listing. Some fish can be eaten raw.
.
Good luck. Good eating.
